Bernard, Tristan

Bernard, Tristan
(1866-1947)
   novelist, playwright
Born Paul Bernard in Besançon, Tristan Bernard, as he is known, was educated in Paris and studied law, although he never practiced it. After a brief business career, he began to contribute humorous pieces and other articles to the periodical La Revue Blanche. He would eventually become equally successful as a moralist, essayist, and playwright. His first play, Les Pieds nickelés, was produced in 1895, followed in 1899 by L'Anglais tel qu'on le parle, a popular one-act farce that has been repeatedly revived, and by a novel, Les Mémoires d'un jeune homme rangé. other works include Triplepatte (1905) and Le Petit Café (1911). Known for its fine sense of irony and comedic phrasing, Tristan Bernard's stage writings have been compared to those of molière, while the humor of his novel is considered reminiscent of that of Charles Dickens.
